Evaluation of the TPTO by the Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology

The minister of Industry and Technology, Mr. Mustafa Varank, evaluated the applications filed to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) in 2019.

Mr. Varank, pointing out that there is an increase in all areas of Intellectual Property, as he says:

‘‘We witnessed an increase in all areas of intellectual property in 2019. Compared to the previous year, the number of the applications has increased 11% percent in the domestic patent applications, 8% percent in the utility model applications, 13% percent in the trademark applications and 11% percent in the design applications. While 8.126 domestic patent applications and 2.906 domestic utility model applications were filed to TURKPATENT, totally 134.353 trademark application of which 119,421 is domestic were filed. This finding signifies that our country made considerable progress in the field of industrial property.’’

The championship will continue in trademark applications.

‘‘Since 2011, Turkey has become the country that has received the most trademark applications in Europe. Other countries have not released information for 2019 regarding the number of the trademark applications yet; however, we will most likely to maintain our championship in this field.’’.

‘‘Investment on design brings about a high commercial success.’’

Mr. Varank, touching on developments regarding design, reported that 46. 188 design applications of which 39,178 is domestic and of which 7,010 is foreign were made in 2019.

Mr. Varank, indicating that innovation through design is budget-friendly compared with R&D, spoke that according to analysis, the firms investing on design show higher commercial success than those that do not invest at all.

İstanbul ranks first in applications.

Mr. Varank, the most of the applications were filed from İstanbul, when the statistics of the cities were compared.

Mr. Varank mentioned that Istanbul was followed by Ankara and Bursa in patent applications, Ankara and İzmir in trademark applications and Bursa and Kayseri in design applications.  

TOP 10 goal for TÜRKPATENT:

‘’With increasing applications in recent years, TURKPATENT has become an authority that has received the most industrial property applications in Europe. Since 2017, TURKPATENT has been providing service as an international authority in the presence of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and has continued enhancing its capacity regarding patent research. The number of the international reports issued by the Office  has increased 7.5 times compared to the previous year. In the world, there are 23 international patent research and examination authorities. TURKPATENT has become the industrial property office that has most quickly increased the number of the reports among these 23 authorities in 2019. In 2023, we aim to put TURKPATENT among the top-ten authorities in the world.’’
